Fake Claude AI Website Distributes Beagle Windows Backdoor via Google Ads

A counterfeit Claude AI site is pushing the Beagle Windows backdoor through Google’s own sponsored search results, weaponizing trust in both Anthropic’s brand and Google Ads. Attackers set up a fake site mimicking Claude AI, luring users with paid results to download a trojanized “Claude-Pro Relay” installer that silently deploys a remote access tool, according to Notebookcheck.

The installer poses as a legitimate Claude interface enhancement, but in reality, it slips the Beagle RAT (remote access trojan) onto Windows machines. Victims get no warning: the malware runs invisibly, giving attackers full remote control while the user believes they’re running an Anthropic service.

Security researchers first spotted the campaign this week after analyzing suspicious traffic from a user who’d installed the fake relay. The malicious site climbed Google’s sponsored search rankings, often appearing above the official Claude AI page, raising questions about the integrity of ad vetting on the world’s dominant search platform.

The Beagle backdoor itself is a known commodity among threat actors for its reliability and stealth. But the twist this time is the attack vector: Google is unwittingly amplifying the threat by elevating malicious actors’ sites above authentic AI providers.

Users should not trust sponsored links for critical software, especially AI tools. Always verify URLs directly—Anthropic’s official Claude service is at claude.ai—and compare with known safe sources. Typo-squatting and lookalike domains are common, so a misplaced character can lead directly to malware.

To detect a Beagle infection, look for unexpected outbound connections, changes to startup processes, or unknown scheduled tasks. Advanced EDR solutions like CrowdStrike or Microsoft Defender for Endpoint can flag Beagle’s C2 callbacks. If infection is suspected, disconnect from the network and run a full malware scan with updated signatures, then reset any exposed credentials.

Cybersecurity teams should monitor threat feeds for new indicators of compromise (IOCs) tied to this campaign and proactively block identified domains at the network level. Google, for its part, faces mounting pressure to overhaul ad screening. Faster automated takedowns and more aggressive manual review of AI-related ads are now table stakes.

Expect threat actors to keep mimicking trending AI brands—Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini—because user demand outpaces awareness of official sources.
